6 free online courses to take your coding career to the next level

At a time when many of us have a few extra hours in our week, now is the perfect opportunity to upskill and make that CV shine.  

We’re lucky these days that there are loads of opportunities online to help us take our skillsets to the next level, particularly in the tech and development domain. 

We’ve pulled together some of the top online resources to help you brush up on your coding skills, and best thing is, they won’t cost you a penny! 

Coursera 

Coursera provides a variety of online coding courses.  Every course is taught by instructors from world-class universities and companies all over the world. When it comes to coding, there are loads of free courses, and normally you need to pay to receive a certificate. As a response to the current situation thoughCoursera is now also offering a variety of courses with free certification 

FutureLearn 

FutureLearn provides a variety of short online coding & programming courses from top universities and leading institutions. Weekly study time ranges from two to six hours per week with course duration between two to six weeks.  

The focus here is on learning together as you join millions of people around the world on the same courseYou can discuss topics with fellow learners and instructors will offer guidance and answer questions too.   

FreeCodeCamp 

Free Code Camp is a non-profit community whose mission is to help people learn to code for free. It uses an interactive platform where users learn by completing coding challenges and building projects online.  It also offers the opportunity to earn verified certificates along the way, and since 2014, it claims that more than 40,000 graduates have been offered jobs at tech companies after completing the FreeCodeCamp certs. 

Each certification takes around 300 hours of dedicated learning but are completely self-paced so you can take as long as you need. There’s also a useful set of challenges to prep you for a coding job interview.  

Udacity 

Udacity offers online courses on a variety of subjects, including a vast choice of tech subjects. There's a big selection of free courses on offer here – and not just basic ones either, but across all skill levels. 

All courses are summarised before you begin, outlining the skill level, any knowledge requirements, whats included in the course and why you should take it.   

Codecademy 

Codecademy is free to use and easy to set up. It offers an array of courses from building a website to analysing data and lots in between. The hands-on approach allows you to learn by doing as you write real, working code and have it tested upon submission. There’s also a handy quiz which asks why you want to learn code and then shows you what to learn to achieve your goals.   

Codecademy has recently released several additional resources to help people continue to learn from home in the current climate.  

Mijingo 

Mijingo is an online learning resource that features step-by-step video tutorials for both web design and development. The online coding courses here aren't for beginners: they're aimed at helping web professionals get up to date with the latest developments.  

Current courses focus on topics such as Git and Twig. Alternatively, you can pick a 'lesson' – these cover one specific element of broader topics. Stream the videos or download them to any device to watch at your leisure.
